Free Crochet Pattern: Dimensional Flower Granny Square

This 5 inch granny square crochet pattern features an eight-petaled flower with petals that "pop" forward.  The example shown was crocheted with worsted weight yarn and a size G hook; finished size will vary based on yarn slection, hook size, and tension.

Ch 8; sl st into 1st ch to form ring.

R1: Ch 2; working in ring, dc 1. *Ch 3, dc 2 in ring* repeat 7 times; ch 3, sl st into ch at beginning of round. Fasten off and change colors.

R2: Sl st into one of the 3 ch sp from R1. *Ch 1, tc 3 in sp between 2 dc from previous round, ch 1, sl st into next 3 ch sp* repeat 8 times. Fasten off and change colors.

R3: Sl st into one of the 3 ch sp from R1; ch 2, dc 2 in 3 ch sp. *Ch 3, sl st in next 3 ch sp, ch 3, dc 3 in next 3 ch sp* repeat 3 times. Ch 3, sl st in next 3 ch sp, ch 3, sl st into ch at beginning of round. Fasten off and change colors.

R4: Sl st into the sp between the 2nd and 3rd dc in one of the 3 dc clusters from R3. Ch 2, dc 2 in same sp. *Dc 3 in 3 ch sp, dc 3 in next 3 ch sp. Dc 3 in sp between 1st and 2nd dc from previous round, ch 3, dc 3 in sp between 2nd and 3rd dc from previous round* repeat 3 times. Project Tips and Ideas Using the Dimensional Flower Granny Square

• This is a fairly bulky, stiff granny square. Used by itself, the motif makes a very warm blanket or scarf. To make a blanket with more drape, alternate this square with another, more open square in checkerboard or other pattern.
• Use up the ends of skeins by using scraps of various bright colors for rounds 1 and 2 and green, black or another color for rounds 3-5, pairing colors and arranging squares to give a random effect.
• For a fun, playful look, make a blanket using mostly plain squares and sprinkle a few flower squares randomly throughout the design.
• Find other 5 inch square patterns that you like and make one of each in a coordinating color scheme; stitch them all together to make a unique, crazy afghan.
