Free Crochet Pattern: Star Flower Granny Square

The center of this granny square begins as a five-pointed star, which eventually turns into a fabulous 5 inch square.

The center of this granny square begins as a five-pointed star, which eventually turns into a fabulous square.  The pattern is floral-inspired, with the second round (shown here in green) representing foliage.  The example shown was crocheted using worsted weight yarn with a size G hook and measures about 5 inches.  Finished size will vary depending on yarn weight, hook size, and tension.

Experiment with different color combinations to achieve various effects.  You can also move the color changes within the pattern for even more possibilities; each will give a slightly different look.  Try these sugestions, or play with your own ideas:

  • At the R3 color change, try changing to a third color instead of reusing the first color as shown in the example.  This will put more emphasis on the star shape of the center and the leafy second round.
  • Use a different color for the ch round to add a fine line framing the inner rim of the outside frame of the motif.
  • Make squares in alternating color combinations and arrange them together for an interesting blanket.  Use a pattern for placing the squares, or arrange the colors randomly throughout the blanket.
